The Legend of SOC

In 1988, John Duncan opened the Sacandaga Outdoor Center without a bit of whitewater rafting experience. A seasoned skier and winter sport fanatic, John was the owner of several ski and outdoor shops in the Gore Mountain Ski Area. Many of his skiing instructors were also avid whitewater rafters who needed summer work. So to keep his employees busy, John hired them as rafting guides, and SOC was born.

Over the past 18 years, John and his staff have developed impressive rafting and kayaking resumes, boasting the rivers of Costa Rica, Mexico, Canada, The United States, Europe, and the Caribbean. A family operation, John’s daughter Jessica, (Jessie to most and second in command), is an accomplished guide and instructor as well, earning her nickname of “Sneak” for her ability to finesse her way through difficult passages of whitewater.

A fluke? A happy accident? Call it what you will, but what began as a way to give ski instructors year round employment, has become the leading whitewater company in the Eastern Adirondacks.

Come and See, Nobody Beats SOC!

The Sacadaga Outdoor Center is the premier outdoor destination for families and groups of all ages and sizes. Our spectacular stretch of Adirondack splendor along the Sacandaga River offers Class II and III rapids. Every detail is considered, from our skilled and personable guides offering insight and banter as you travel the river; to a shop chock full of character at the start of your journey; and a killer outfitters base at the end of your ride.

SOC is the superior choice for bachelor parties, camp outings and family reunions. It is the closest outfitter to Lake George and Saratoga Springs, with extensive lodging, camping and RV options. We can arrange horseback rides in conjunction with outings and have incredible videos and photos available from every ride. The SOC difference lives in our stellar equipment, unforgettable service and an unequalled safety record.

Our trips begin just below the Stewarts Bridge Dam and ends where the Sacandaga River meets the Hudson, which just happens to be the location of our Take Out, Kayak Shop, and Picnic Grounds. Just a short walk back to our rafty shop where your adventure began, photos of your trip will already be on the monitor when you arrive.

Whitewater perfection, spring, summer, and fall recreation.

Our LocationSOC boasts the best location on the river. Where the Hudson and Sacandaga rivers meet in Hadley NY, you’ll find the best rafting, tubing, and kayaking around. With one short bus ride to the put-in, you’ll be sweeping down the river in no time, returning to your vehicle without the aggravation of an additional bus trip.

At SOC we provide you with a complete, hassle-free way to blow your hot summer days out of the water.
